About Rwanda Girls Initiative

Rwanda Girls Initiative founded Gashora Girls  Academy of Science and Technology, an all-girls secondary boarding school in Rwanda. Immediately following the tragic 1994 genocide, Rwanda’s population was 70% female. The country’s leadership recognized that the future of the nation was dependent on creating true gender equity. Our school, the Gashora Girls Academy of Science and Technology, was founded to enable young women to reach their full potential — and as a result, transform Rwanda and change the world.

Investing in girls’ education, especially secondary education, is one of the most powerful levers one can pull to spark systemic change. Girls' education promotes economic development, fosters peace, and reduces societal inequalities. We know it’s important to get girls into the classroom. We want to get them into the boardroom, too — and the operating room, the laboratory, and the capitol.

The Gashora Girls Academy is the most socio-economically diverse school in Rwanda, enrolling girls from all backgrounds and geographic regions of the country. Students are accepted based on academic potential, not financial capacity. 100% of students receive financial aid on a sliding scale, depending on their needs. Most girls pay less than what they would pay if they attended a government school.  We are proud that 95% of our graduates have gone on to study at over 224 different universities in 31 countries.  They are changing the world!
