These original lithographs from the 1st official French edition are some of Chagall's most popular images. After the success of their 1956 collaboration on a portfolio of color lithographs to commemorate the publication of Chagall's long-delayed set of etchings for the Bible, Antoine Teriade and Chagall agreed to devote another issue of Verve to a set of illustrations illuminating the Bible. Meyer Shapiro has called Chagall one of the greatest religious artists of all time, and these lithographs show: powerful drawing, intense colors, and most of all, compassion for the characters in the Bible. These are printed using limestone plates with up to 24 colors for each piece. Teriade; Printer: Mourlot Studios, Paris. (Reverse M. 275).
