This rare series by Matisse was created in 1941. It commemorated some of his most prized drawings in a limited lithographic edition of only 500 copies. It was published on the occasion of the Matisse exhibition at the Galerie Louis Carré in November 1941. Paris: Louis Carré, 1941. An exquisite production with fine Matisse illustrations; extremely rare. "The essential thing is to spring forth, to express the bolt of lightning one senses upon contact with a thing. The function of the artist is not to translate an observation but to express the shock of the object on his nature; the shock, with the original reaction." -- Henri Matisse
