This beautiful lithograph was created based upon a drawing done in 1963. Pablo Picasso, a prolific and experimental artist, retains his distinctive style in this image of a mother and her child. Economic lines and negative space comprise a large portion of the composition and the artist opts to use color only for the background and the crown of flowers that rest on the mother's head. The colors function to create a green halo around the mother figure. Moreover, Picasso uses the color green to relate motherhood with nature and fertility. Indeed, the mother's arms caress and physically distance the child from the chaos of the outside world, evoked by the rough and sketched application of color in the background. Printed in Paris on Arches paper.
On Arches handmade paper with filigree edge and watermark
