This statement print is a composite of Albumen photography & miniature metal horse figures. It's hand touched with watercolor pencil and gouache. In this composition, Johnny foreigner, the central figure in the square on horseback, sets up an unlawful homestead in Piazzetta di San Marco, Venice. It's not part of the piazza, rather a strategic place that adjoins the open space connecting the south side of the piazza to the waterway of the lagoon. Imagine It's midnight and enemy lines are drawn for a caught-in-action showdown.
The lion symbol branded on the front of their fort is Inspired by Napoleons reign over Venice. In this case, the lion is stripped of mythical high status to that of cattle. This is juxtaposed by the winged Lion of Venice which perched on the large granite column, which as come to symbolize the city and its patron saint, St. Mark. In Christian tradition, Mark the Evangelist, the author of the second gospel is symbolized by a lion, a figure of courage and monarchy. The Lion's taken to France after Napoleon's conquest of the Venetian Republic, during his 1797 campaign in Italy.
